Dubai Free Zones – An Overview

Dubai Free Zones are specialized economic areas developed to attract international businesses by offering a regulated yet investor-friendly setup. Each zone operates under its own authority and typically focuses on specific sectors—like tech in Dubai Internet City, media in Dubai Media City, or logistics in Jebel Ali Free Zone. These zones support economic diversification and foreign investment by simplifying company formation and offering modern infrastructure. Free zone companies are governed by zone-specific regulations and can trade internationally. Over time, Dubai Free Zones have become strong business communities that support global trade, encourage new ideas, and help companies grow with confidence. As per latest regulations in 2025, Dubai free zones can now expand operations into the mainland.

2. Select Your Business Activity

Pick from a wide variety of permitted business activities offered by the chosen Dubai Free Zone ranging from trading and consultancy to media, tech, and logistics.

3. Choose Your Office Space

Select a workspace solution that matches your requirements—flexi desk, dedicated desk, private office, or executive suite.

4. Obtain Initial Approvals (if required)

Depending on your selected activity, you may need pre-approvals from the relevant authorities or the Free Zone authority.

5. Apply for Your Business License

Submit the necessary documentation and apply for the appropriate license - commercial, service, or industrial.

6. License and Lease Agreement Issuance

Once the application is approved, receive your official Dubai Free Zone license along with your office lease documentation.

Note: The process may vary depending on your business activity and regulatory requirements.

Residence Visa Process for Dubai Free Zone Companies

Once your trade license is issued, you can begin the visa process, provided your selected business package includes visa allocation. The visa process includes the following steps:

Step 1: Apply for Establishment Card

Begin by applying for the Establishment Card, which is required to process any UAE visa.

Step 2: Submit E-Visa Application

Prepare and submit your e-visa application with these documents:

  • Copy of passport
  • Business license
  • Current UAE visa or visa cancellation paper (if applicable)
  • Establishment card
  • Passport-sized photo (white background)

Step 3: E-Visa Issuance & UAE Entry

If you're currently outside the UAE, enter using the approved e-visa.
If you're already in the UAE, an e-visa with Change of Status will be processed to shift your visa under the new company.

Step 4: Undergo Medical Test

Provide the following for your medical fitness test:

  • Original passport
  • Copy of Change of Status confirmation (if applicable)
  • E-visa copy
  • Passport-size photos

Step 5: Register for Emirates ID Biometrics

Attend your biometrics appointment with:

  • Original passport
  • Change of Status copy (if applicable)
  • E-visa copy
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Medical test report
  • Emirates ID application
  • Health insurance policy (not mandatory in Dubai, but some free zones may request it)

Step 6: Receive Residence Visa & Emirates ID

Once approved, the UAE residence visa will be issued digitally. Physical passport stamping is no longer required—the Emirates ID now serves as your official residency proof.
Ensure you have:

  • Emirates ID application
  • Stamped medical report

Step 7: Emirates ID Issuance

After all steps are completed, your Emirates ID will be printed and issued, officially confirming your residency in the UAE.
